His double century (off 136 balls) is the third fastest 200 in terms of balls taken, beating Chris Gayle (138) and Virender Sehwag (140). The previous highest by a SL batter was Sanath Jayasuriya's 189 against India in 2000 at Sharjah. Nissanka's 210 is the joint fifth highest individual ODI score by a batter.
Twelve double centuries have been scored in ODI cricket's long history. Seven of these centuries have been by Indian players. Sachin Tendulkar was the first player to reach the landmark, scoring 200* against South Africa at Gwalior in 2010. Rohit Sharma is the only player to have scored three double centuries in ODI cricket. He also holds the record for the highest individual score in an ODI innings, with 264 runs against Sri Lanka in 2014.
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan holds the fastest double hundred (200) record in ODI cricket. He took only 126 balls to reach the landmark against Bangladesh at Chattogram on 10 December 2022. Glenn Maxwell is second with 200 in 128 balls.
Former West Indies opener Chris Gayle is the first batter to score a double century in the ODI World Cup (2015). New Zealand’s Martin Guptill became the second player to achieve this feat a month later in the same World Cup.
