Most Dismissals in IPL history

The IPL is one of the biggest cricket leagues in the world. The league is known for its fast-paced games, thrilling finishes, and big hits. It's a league where players can shine and make a name for themselves on the big stage.

Some unfortunate moments in cricket happen when batsmen are dismissed multiple times in the same innings. While some players hit centuries and take wickets, others set records for being dismissed multiple times in a single match.

Let's look at some of the players who have had the most dismissals in an innings and the most dismissals in a series, respectively.

What Does It Mean to Be Dismissed?

In cricket, "dismissal" refers to when a batsman gets out. There are several ways this can happen, including being caught, bowled, stumped, run out, or given out LBW (leg before wicket). In IPL matches, a batsman usually only gets one chance to bat, but in rare cases, players have been dismissed more than once in the same innings.

This can happen due to good bowling, mistakes made by the batsman, or just wrong timings.

KC Sangakkara – 5 Dismissals in One Innings

One of the most surprising records for most dismissals in an IPL innings belongs to Kumar Sangakkara. On April 14, 2011, in a match between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Sangakkara was dismissed five times during the same innings. This is the highest number of dismissals for any player in a single IPL innings.

Despite his reputation as one of the finest wicketkeeper-batsmen, Sangakkara could not avoid being dismissed in various ways. RCB's bowlers and fielders were in top form that day, and Sangakkara found himself dismissed for multiple catches.

YV Takawale – 4 Dismissals in One Innings

The 2008 IPL season, which was the first year of the tournament, also witnessed a rare event. During a match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals on May 7, 2008, YV Takawale of Mumbai Indians was dismissed four times in the same innings.

Takawale was a young wicketkeeper-batsman, but he could not make an impact during this match. He was dismissed in multiple ways, including being caught and stumped.

Rajasthan Royals were dominant in the field. Though Mumbai Indians managed to post a decent score, Takawale's record of four dismissals became a symbol of a bad day at the office for the young player.

MN van Wyk – 4 Dismissals in One Innings

In the 2009 IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 29, 2009, in a match where MN van Wyk of KKR found himself dismissed four times in the same innings.

Van Wyk, known for his attacking batting, was unable to handle the pressure of RCB's bowlers and fielders, who made the match difficult for him.

He was dismissed for multiple reasons, including being caught off good deliveries and falling victim to excellent fielding. Van Wyk's struggles highlighted how quickly a batsman's form can dip in the T20 format, especially when facing quality bowlers like those in RCB's squad. His four dismissals were a tough setback, and they remain one of the more unfortunate records in IPL history.

KD Karthik – 4 Dismissals in One Innings

Another example of a player facing multiple dismissals in an innings occurred during the 2009 IPL season. KD Karthik, playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), was dismissed four times during a match against Rajasthan Royals on May 17, 2009.

Karthik struggled to find his form that day, and he was dismissed in several ways. He was caught twice and stumped twice, which made it a tough day for the Delhi Daredevils. Rajasthan Royals, led by Shane Warne, were in top form, and they made full use of Karthik's bad luck. This record of four dismissals in an innings became a reminder that even the best players can have a day where nothing seems to go right.

RV Uthappa – 4 Dismissals in One Innings

On April 6, 2012, during a match between Warriors and Mumbai Indians, Robin Uthappa of Warriors found himself dismissed four times in a single innings. Uthappa, known for his aggressive batting style, was dismissed in multiple ways, including being caught and stumped. Mumbai Indians' bowlers, led by Lasith Malinga, were too strong for Uthappa, and his tough day on the field became part of IPL's history.
