England vs India 2022 3rd ODI

Both England and India go into this series decider with one convincing win apiece. India’s bowlers were too hot to handle at The Oval, while Reece Topley and friends returned the favor at Lord’s skittling the tourists for just 146. In fact, the Indian innings marked the first time in more than 20 years that the first 4 overs were maidens.

After such a meek batting display, Team India’s batters will look to make amends. But even as they prepare for this crunch game, the whispers grow ever louder about V. Kohli’s form or the lack of it. Since his last international 100 in November 2019, Kohli has now gone 78 innings across formats without reaching 3 figures. More worryingly, he has just 1 fifty in the last 13 innings.

The bowlers, especially the new-ball pairing of J. Bumrah and M. Shami, have done an excellent job in the two matches played so far, while Y. Chahal was India’s standout performer at Lord’s. P. Krishna may get another chance to impress, though India are likely to play the strongest XI with the series on the line.

England team’s top order has failed in both games, and they were indebted to the lower middle order for the eventual total of 246 at Lord’s. L. Livingstone, M. Ali and D. Willey are all big hitters, but India will be more wary of that high-class top order clicking into gear when most needed. They also need to quickly find answers to Topley’s left-arm threat.

Weather Report

The UK, like much of Europe, has been enduring a heat wave for much of July. Though Old Trafford is notorious for cold and gray weather, the temperature will be a warm 27°C when both teams take to the field.

Ind vs Eng 3rd ODI Pitch Report

Old Trafford has been a good surface for batters with big scores being scored in a consistent manner. A score of 290 or more has been crossed on 6 occasions in the last 10 matches. The spinners will be key to taking wickets as they are more effective here than any other ground in England. The average first innings score in the last 6 ODIs is 276 runs.

Toss

As with several English grounds, Old Trafford too has been a bat-first venue in recent times. Of the last 10 matches, 9 have been won by the team batting first. A total of around 275 will be needed for the team batting first to put the chasing team under pressure.

TOP FANTASY PICKS FOR ENG VS IND 3rd ODI Match

Team England

  • J. Bairstow looked set for a big score in the previous ODI but got dismissed trying to slog sweep off Chahal. He made a run-a-ball 38 with 6 boundaries. Bairstow is the top run-getter in the current English squad at Old Trafford, with 425 runs in 8 matches. In 2020, he made 112, 0 and 84 in the three innings against Australia here.
  • M. Ali scored 47 runs off 64 balls in the 2nd ODI at Lord’s. He needs just 20 more runs to complete 2000 in ODIs, and that tally has come at an outstanding strike rate of 100.25. He also has taken 91 wickets at an economy rate of 5.27.
  • R. Topley took his career-best 6-24 at Lord’s, and now has 28 wickets from his 17 ODIs. The economy rate of 5.01 is also excellent. His height (6ft 7in) and the natural left-armer’s angle make him especially awkward to play.

Team India

  • R. Sharma was dismissed for no score in the 2nd ODI, with the left-arm deliveries troubling him again. Apart from that, he has looked good on this tour so far. The 76-run innings in the 1st ODI will give him confidence to make a solid contribution in this all-important decider.
  • S. Yadav made 27 runs off 29 balls in the 2nd ODI before edging a ball onto his stumps. He has a strike rate of 102.08 in the eight ODI innings he has played. With the Indian middle order having struggled for so long, he could be one of the main beneficiaries of a new era.
  • Y. Chahal troubled the English batter in the last game and finished with figures of 4/47 in his 10 overs. He has taken 108 ODI wickets from just 63 matches, and his economy rate of 5.17 is also noteworthy in a time when totals in excess of 300 are common. Now he is well established as India’s premier white-ball spinner.
