The first ODI of this series was the first 50-overs game that the West Indies had played in Pakistan since December 2006. It proved to be a great contest too, with Pakistan’s middle-order batting depth eventually proving decisive. As both teams gear up for the 2023 World Cup, it was a reminder for both teams of their strengths and weaknesses.

Pakistan, who have reached the World Cup semi-final only once in this century, have perhaps their strongest batting line-up in years. B. Azam, their captain, has an incredible 17 ODI hundreds from just 87 matches, while I. ul Haq and M. Rizwan are also in great touch. F. Zaman’s explosive batting will always be associated with the 2017 Champions Trophy final win over India. However, the bowling lacks the quality of old. S. Afridi is one of the world’s best pace bowlers, but both H. Rauf and H. Ali struggle for consistency.

West Indies are missing several stars like J. Holder, S. Hetmyer, D. Bravo and K. Roach, who could be part of the World Cup plans. The team will rely heavily on the batting of S. Hope and the bowling of A. Joseph and A. Hosein to fight back in the series.

Though it will be slightly cooler than what it was during the first game, the temperature will still be around 43°C when the match starts at 4 PM local time. The organizers were forced to push back the start times due to the dangerously high temperatures.

PAK vs WI 2nd ODI Pitch Report

Because of the political situation in Pakistan, Multan hadn’t hosted an ODI since April 2008 before this series began. The surface for the first game was excellent for batting, with some assistance for the spinners.

Toss

Given that Pakistan chased down a 300-plus target without too many alarms, both captains might look at opting to bowl first if they win the toss.
