Australia go to Colombo from Pallekele knowing that they should really have been 2-0 up instead of all square at 1-1 in this 5-match series. Losing their last 5 wickets for 19 runs in a low-scoring game was in keeping with a string of such collapses in Asia over the past decade. To make things worse, it wasn’t so much spin as the medium pace of Chamika Karunaratne that wrecked the second half of their innings.

Injuries continue to take a toll on the touring squad. Marcus Stoinis has been ruled out of the series with a side strain, and a similar injury will keep Ashton Agar out of the 50-overs matches as well. Australia were already without Mitchell Marsh, who has a calf strain, and Mitchell Starc, who cut his finger during the T20I series.

Sri Lanka won game 2 without Wanindu Hasaranga, their frontline spin-bowling all-rounder. It remains to be seen if his groin strain heals quickly enough to take part in the remaining ODIs.

The Premadasa is built on what was once a swamp, and has usually been a hard surface to bat on. Conditions have eased in recent seasons, but Australia will need to show much more patience than they did while tumbling to defeat in the last game.

Top Fantasy Picks for SL vs Aus 3rd ODI Match

Sri Lanka

  • K. Mendis is one of the veterans of this Sri Lankan side. His 2419 ODI runs, including 2 centuries, have come at a strike-rate of 84.43. He is the top run-scorer of the series with 122 runs in 2 matches at a solid strike rate of 95.31.
  • D. Wellange has made an instant impact since his debut in the 1st ODI. He has picked up wickets at crucial moments in both matches. He is the joint-highest wicket-taker of the series with four wickets and has also scored 20 runs with the bat in the last match.
  • C. Karunaratne made a difference with his medium pace in the last game, with his 3 wickets including the scalps of Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell. Also, he is capable of whacking the ball lower down the order.

Australia

  • M. Labuschagne is a good player of spin and has a decent ODI career so far. He has scored 603 runs in 18 matches at an average of 35.47 and a strike rate of 89.46. Marnus has scored 42 runs and picked up 2 wickets in the 2 matches played.
  • G. Maxwell took 2-35 with the ball, and then smashed a 25-ball 30, but it still wasn’t enough to swing the 3rd ODI Australia’s way. He has scored 110 runs in 3 matches at a strike rate of 144.73.
  • P. Cummins figures of 4-35 in the last game suggests his rhythm is back after the small break in competitive cricket. But Australia’s selectors want to carefully manage the workload on, especially with a Test series starting later this month.
