Dwaine Pretorius: The Accountant All-rounder
In a parallel universe, Dwayne Pretorius might have played against V. Kohli and R. Jadeja in the Under-19 World Cup final in Malaysia in 2008. Instead, he watched from thousands of miles away, with a serious knee injury having ruled him out a month before the tournament began. Dwaine Pretorius plays for South Africa cricket team and Chennai Team in the Indian T20 League.
Such setbacks were common in his early years. After studying accounting, Pretorius got his first professional contract with the Gauteng Lions in 2012. But after over-training, he broke down and doctors even doubted whether he could withstand the rigors of a T20 game. But Pretorius persevered and made his debut for South Africa in 2016. There were even 3 Test appearances in 2019-20, as Dale Steyn, one of his heroes, struggled with injury in the final stages of his career.
Dwaine Pretorius: Recent Times
But Pretorius has often made his opportunities count, taking wickets, being economical, and also contributing with the bat in the lower order. In the Indian T20 League, Pretorius finally got his chance with the Chennai team in 2022. They may have been the Indian T20 League champions, but the season was a long struggle for MS Dhoniâs men. Pretorius played just 6 games and didnât make much of a difference to the teamâs fortunes.
For South Africa, Pretorius retains hopes of playing a starring role in the T20 World Cup later this year, as the country still seeks a first major trophy this century. The pitches in Australia should suit his back-of-a-length bowling and the man who had to wait for his first cap until he was 28 could well have a big part to play.

Dwaine Pretorius - Key Skills and Strengths
Though he started out as a genuinely quick bowler, a succession of serious injuries forced Pretorius to sacrifice pace and prioritize accuracy. Despite that, because of the height from which he delivers the ball, he can get disconcerting bounce and trouble batters. And with the bat, he is a dangerous hitter capable of clearing the rope with ease toward the end of a limited-overs innings.
Dwaine Pretorius - Awards and Achievements
Though he made his debut for the South Africa cricket team back in 2016, itâs only in recent times that Pretorius has become a regular pick in the white-ball formats. On the Test stage, he hasnât played since 2019, when he deputized for the injured Dale Steyn in matches against England.
Here are some of Pretoriusâs biggest achievements in international cricket:
-
Pretoriusâs figures of 5 for 17 against Pakistan at Lahore in February 2021 are the best for a South African in T20Is.
-
Pretorius is one of only 14 players to take a 3-wicket haul in ODIs at a cost of 5 runs or less.
-
In that same match against New Zealand in Wellington in 2017, Pretorius became only the second South African bowler after Shaun Pollock to concede less than 1 run an over in an ODI spell.
Dwayne Pretoriusâs Indian T20 League Journey
Pretorius finally got his chance in the Indian T20 League in 2022, despite having played for a string of franchises across the world before that. The Chennai team picked him up at his base price of â¹50 lakhs at the auction. But in a poor season for the defending champions, he was a peripheral figure, playing just 6 matches. He struggled to adjust to the conditions, conceding 10 runs an over with the ball.
Here are some of Conwayâs biggest achievements in the Indian T20 League:
-
Conway topped the averages for Chennai in the 2022 season.
-
Of those who crossed 100 runs for Chennai in 2022, only Shivam Dube had a better strike rate than Conwayâs.
-
Only Ruturaj Gaikwad matched his tally of 3 fifties for Chennai in 2022, but he played twice as many matches.
