Indian T20 League: Bangalore Team

There is definitely an end-of-an-era feel to this Indian T20 League season as far as Bangalore are concerned. Having been captain for nearly two-third of the games Bangalore have played since the competition began in 2008, Virat Kohli will step down as captain once the season is over. There is no obvious successor either. AB de Villiers, whose spectacular batting has lit up the league for over a decade, retired from international cricket over three years ago, and it remains to be seen how much longer he’ll have the motivation to play league cricket.

Glenn Maxwell, one of their big-money signings at the 2021 auction, turns 33 soon, while Devdutt Padikkal is just making his way in the game. But rather than focus on an uncertain future, Bangalore’s attention will be on the current season, and how they can make it to the play-offs for the second year in a row.

Other teams like Mumbai and Chennai may take that for granted, but Bangalore have been very inconsistent over the last 13 years. After losing a close final to Hyderabad in 2016, they finished last, 6th and last in the next three seasons respectively. It was only in 2020 that they just sneaked back into the play-offs.

The batting, once the envy of the league when Chris Gayle was also in tandem with Kohli and de Villiers, is still strong, but Bangalore have never quite cracked the bowling code. Harshal Patel, who leads the bowling charts with 17 wickets so far this year, is only the third Bangalore bowler to take more than 50 wickets in the history of the competition.

New Zealand’s Mike Hesson heads the coaching group and is assisted by two former Indian international players in Sanjay Bangar and Sridharan Sriram. Adam Griffith, who played for Tasmania, guides the bowlers.

Bangalore started the season with a bang, winning 5 of their first 6 matches, but subsequent losses have ensured there can’t be any complacency going into the final stages. Maxwell has already made an impression, but Bangalore need much more from Kyle Jamieson, both with the bat and the ball, if they’re to challenge the teams above them in the points table.

Team Bangalore Origin

One of the founder-members of the Indian T20 League in 2008, Bangalore have the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the heart of the city as their home ground. However, they have a mediocre record there, with just 42 wins in 86 games.

Team Bangalore Owners

Owned by United Spirits Limited, Bangalore are the fourth-most valuable franchise in the league, according to the latest figures published in 2021.

Virat Kohli: Bangalore Team Captain

Kohli made his Indian T20 League debut for Bangalore just weeks after leading India to the Under-19 World Cup in 2008. In the years since, Kohli has made many batting records. The only player to cross 6000 runs in the league so far, he smashed the single-season record with 973 runs in 2016. Yet despite leading Bangalore in 133 games, the trophy has eluded him. Having announced his decision to give up the captaincy at the end of this season, this is his last chance to hold aloft the trophy for the team he says he wants to play for until he retires.
