Bangalore vs Mumbai: Nearly Men Face the Champions

Once this used to be the most intense of rivalries in the Indian T20 League, with neither team being able to establish its supremacy over the other. In fact, when Bangalore won their first encounter in 2014, the head-to-head record (excluding the matches of the Champions League T20) was locked at 7-7. However, of their next 14 matches, Mumbai have won 10, adding 4 more titles to the first one they secured in 2013.

For Bangalore and the Virat Kohli-AB de Villiers combination that has been central to their fortunes for a decade, time is running out. The last of their 3 losses in the final was back in 2016. This season, which they have started well with 5 wins from 7 games, perhaps represents the last opportunity for de Villiers in particular to win some silverware.

Mumbai are seeking an unprecedented third title in a row. While Bangalore’s story is largely built on batting heroics, Mumbai’s dominance was established by the yorkers and unorthodox variations of Lasith Malinga and, later, Jasprit Bumrah. There have been other factors at work, such as Rohit Sharma’s excellent leadership, but Mumbai are testament to the fact that great bowling can win you trophies.

Bangalore Team vs Mumbai Team: Head-to-Head Record

After losing 5 games in a row midway through the last decade, Bangalore have managed to win 3 of their last 6 matches.

Matches: 28

Mumbai won both their Champions League T20 matches, in 2010 and 2011.

Bangalore Team vs Mumbai Team: Head-to-Head History

Given that they’ve made 9 finals between them, it seems strange that their only play-off meeting was back in 2010, which Mumbai won easily.

With the Australian duo of Adam Zampa and Daniel Sams opting out, Bangalore have called up two Sri Lankan replacements. Wanindu Hasaranga is a highly rated all-rounder, while Dushmantha Chameera adds depth to the pace attack. Tim David, the big-hitting Singaporean, has replaced New Zealand’s Finn Allen, and Washington Sundar’s injury means a chance for Bengal’s Akash Deep. However, the real game-changer for Bangalore is the addition of Glenn Maxwell, who was in sparkling form in the first half of the tournament.

Mumbai will be encouraged by the fact that they sit in a play-off place despite the Pandya brothers, Hardik and Krunal, not having shown their best form yet. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, both coming off Test wins in England, will lead a potent attack, while Rahul Chahar’s displays in April-May earned him a spot in India’s World T20 squad. Expect plenty of big hits from the in-form Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard.
