Mumbai vs Delhi: The Clash of Last Season’s Finalists

Despite never having won the trophy, Delhi are one of the teams to have consistently troubled Mumbai in the Indian T20 League. In fact, until Mumbai put together a 5-match winning streak between April 2019 and November 2020, Delhi held the upper hand in their head-to-head contests. Mumbai won all 4 of their matches last season though, including the final in Dubai.

Delhi’s last campaign tailed off after they led the table at one stage. They find themselves in the same position again, with 6 wins from 8 games. Mumbai are in 4th place, having suffered 3 defeats in their 7 matches. Ricky Ponting won one title as Mumbai’s coach, and has followed pretty much the same template since taking the Delhi job in 2018. Delhi have made the play-offs in the last two seasons, and only a big slump will prevent them from making it three in a row.

What Mumbai have is unmatched experience. Kieron Pollard and Rohit Sharma have been with them over a decade, and this is Jasprit Bumrah’s 9th season with the franchise. It’s no coincidence that all three have been central to Mumbai’s successes, and continue to be so.
