Punjab Indian T20 League Team

Captained by a new skipper Shikhar Dhawan, Punjab have the dubious distinction of being one of the only three Indian T20 League franchises not to win the trophy. In the inaugural season in 2008, they reached the semi-finals, and in 2014, they lost to Kolkata in a thrilling final.

Trevor Bayliss is the head coach and Brad Haddin is the assistant coach. Wasim Jaffer is the batting coach while Sunil Joshi and Charl Langeveldt guide the bowlers.

You have to go back to 2017 for the last time Punjab finished as high as 5th in the points table. Based on the talent available to them, the team will look to better that record. Here we look at the team, its history and performances down the years in the Indian T20 League.

Team Punjab Origin

The Punjab team was founded in 2008, though it was rebranded in time for the 2021 season. Though they’ve played the majority of their home games at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, they’ve also used venues as far apart as Dharamsala and Indore for home matches.

Team Punjab Owners: Indian T20 League

The Punjab franchise is owned by a consortium that includes Dabur, the Wadia Group, Preity Zinta and the Apeejay Surrendra Group. According to the last released figures, only the Lucknow team has a lower brand value in the Indian T20 League.

Shikhar Dhawan: Punjab Team Captain

After consistent performances since the inaugural edition of the league, India’s Shikhar “Gabbar” Dhawan will lead the Punjab team in the 2023 season.

Dhawan is the second-highest run-getter in the history of the Indian T20 League with 6244 runs to his name with the help of 2 hundreds and 47 half-centuries. With the wealth of experience under his belt and lots of runs against his name, the left-hander will be crucial to Punjab’ fortunes.

Punjab Team Facts

Since reaching the semifinal in the first season of the Indian T20 League, Punjab haven’t had much to smile about. Making the final in 2014 turned out to be an exception, followed by more miserable seasons. Here are some interesting facts about the team:

  • Of the franchises currently in the league, Punjab (45.87) have a worse win percentage which is slightly better than Delhi (45.94).
  • In 2020, KL Rahul became only the third player after Chris Gayle (2012) and David Warner (2015) to win the Orange Cap for being the leading run scorer in a team that didn’t make the play-offs.
