Before the start of this Indian T20 League season, if you’d told someone that Chennai and Mumbai would be at the bottom of the points table nearly halfway through the league phase, with just 1 win from 12 matches amongst them, you’d have been laughed out of the room. After all, these teams have combined to lift the trophy 9 times in 14 seasons. 

But those achievements count for very little if you play as poorly as these two teams have so far. Chennai got their first win of the season in their 5^th outing, but were then made to look clueless as D. Miller and R. Khan pulled off a stunning victory for table-topping Gujarat in the final over of a match that Chennai controlled most of the way. The bowling looks lightweight and too many big games haven’t yet delivered for the defending champions.   

Team Mumbai’s plight is even worse. D. Brevis, the South African teen, has shown flashes of genuine class, while S. Yadav and T. Varma have batted well, but experienced stalwarts like R. Sharma and K. Pollard have had miserable seasons. J. Bumrah has been well below his lethal best, while T. Mills has gone for more than 11 runs an over. Mumbai have had chances in several matches, but have had no answers when put under pressure. 

These two teams have been so used to fighting it out for dominance of the league. This time, it’s a scrap for survival. If Mumbai lose, their season is almost certainly over. Chennai too have next to no margin for error.

• R. Meredith could be the man that Mumbai draft in to support J. Bumrah in the pace department. Meredith will offer pace and bounce, and hopefully take some of the pressure off Bumrah, who currently is being used as both striker bowler and damage limiter.

• S. Dube has scored 226 runs at an exceptional strike rate of 168.65 in the middle of a horror run for Chennai. His highlight was the unbeaten 95 runs scored in Chennai’s only victory this season, which came against Bangalore.   
• R. Uthappa has scored 197 runs at an excellent strike rate of 152.71. The greatest compliment you can pay him is to say that he has mostly filled the void left by the departure of F. du Plessis.  
• D. Bravo will turn 39 soon, but has played so much T20 cricket that he understands the format like few others. Even in a team that has misfired badly so far, he has taken 10 wickets at an economy rate of 8.35.
